Thermal Imaging

What's Thermal Imaging?

Thermal imaging or Thermography is the process of using a special camera designed to look only for heat by way of Infra Red (IR) energy waves.

Unlike light waves, IR is invisible to the naked eye and therefore so is heat. Potential problems can often be found due to an excess of heat being released by the component, even those which would normally produce some heat when performing at their optimum level.

Because heat cannot be seen and certainly any differences between normal temperature and raised levels due to possible malfunction could not be picked up by even the most highly skilled engineer, thermography makes perfect sense to use as part of a normal maintenance schedule.

Safety

Thermal imaging is a non-contact technology used to help identify potential electrical, mechanical or process problems from a safe distance. This means you can scan moving, elevated and high temperature surfaces without needing to get too close.

Productivity

Whether you work in an industrial or commercial facility, you can quickly scan large surface areas for temperature differences, often indicating whether a problem exists or a failure could be imminent.

Profitability

Turn to thermal imaging to drive improvements to your bottom line, use to reduce energy usage or to help keep your mission critical equipment running.

Why use Thermal Imaging?

A regular programme of Thermal imaging as part of routine maintenance can highlight potential problems long before an event. As a result, any required repairs can be planned for in terms of both time and budget.

In electrical systems, Thermal imaging can find:

  • Loose connections
  • Overloads
  • Phase imbalances
  • Blocked or restricted cooling tubes in transformers
  • High resistance in fuses and switchgear

Thermal Imaging is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools for predictive maintenance. By detecting anomalies often invisible to the naked eye, thermography allows corrective action to be taken before costly system failures occur.

Where can Thermal Imaging save me time and money?

Inside electrical distribution and services (Switch gear, panels, controls, fuses, transformers, receptacles, lighting, conductors, overhead buses and motor control centres)

Motors, pumps and mechanical (Electric motors and generators, pumps, compressors, evaporators, bearings, couplings, gearboxes, gaskets/seals, belts, rollers and disconnects)

Process (Tanks and vessels, pipes, valves and traps, reactors and process insulation)

HVAC/R (Air conditioning, heating, air handlers and refrigeration)

Outside electrical distribution for utilities (Transformers, bushings, insulators, transmission lines, other exterior conductors, service connections, disconnects and capacitor banks)

We use the most up-to-date equipment supplied by FLUKE to ensure we can provide the best service for you.
